We’d come all that way into Syria, put all our lives at risk, including Akeem’s, and the girls weren’t even there. In about two minutes, I was going to take all of my frustration out on the woman in front of me and end her miserable existence on this earth. Right after she told me where the girls were.

To get that information, I’d either have to beat it out of her, or stay in character long enough to get her to tell me voluntarily. That’d take less time, so I chose that tact. I could always force it out of her later if need be.

First, I needed to put on a show. Make her believe I was part of the BGS organization. I paced around in a circle showing my displeasure.

“This isn’t good,” I kept saying. “Some heads are going to roll.”

Curly said spying was acting. Playing a role. People would believe whatever you wanted them to believe if you were convincing enough.

“Where are the girls?” I said, with as much anger in my voice as I could muster without it being over the top. I’d stopped pacing and was now staring straight into the woman’s eyes.

“I came all the way out here and they aren’t even here,” I said, when she didn’t answer right away. “Somebody’s going to pay for this screwup. Tell me why it shouldn’t be you.”

The woman seemed confused. Probably wondering how she’d gotten in this situation.

I got right in her face.

“What do you have to say for yourself? Why did you let the girls leave when I’m supposed to pick them up?”

“Who are you?” she asked nervously. “No one told me you were coming. My orders were to load the girls on a plane for Croatia. That’s what I did.”

We were getting somewhere. The girls were probably on their way to the same place the four girls were headed before we crashed.

I shook my head violently from side to side.

“No. No. No. No.”

I let the words sink in.

“They were supposed to go to Croatia,” I said roughly. “But those plans changed. I’m supposed to pick them up and take them to Jordan. I’ve got a hundred customers expecting those girls on their private planes next week. How is that possible if they’re in Croatia? This is unbelievable.”

“I know nothing of it.”

“When did they leave?” I asked.

“They haven’t left yet.”

“What?”

Now I was the one confused. The girls were still here? It shot a sense of urgency through me. I reacted like a motorcycle that’d been revved with a flick of the wrist from the handlebars.

I was back in her space again.

“Where are the girls?”

The woman motioned for me to follow her to the side of the building. Off in the distance, I saw a plane. We knew the compound had a landing strip. A makeshift airport. We’d seen it in the satellite images. We hadn’t seen the activity around the plane because it was behind a hangar. The door to the plane was still open, but it appeared to be preparing to take off.
